What Is The Computer Really Used For?

For me, living without a computer is like living without my car. No day passes that I don’t make use of a computer. I might not turn on my laptop through out the whole day on Sundays, but I still check my e-mails on my mobile device; that is, my phone or my iPad. I search for an address every now and then; I am actually pretty bad with directions. I remember when we did not have smartphones, and GPS devices were so expensive, I would go to yahoo maps and I would print the turn-by-turn directions to wherever I was going. Boy! That saved me many times, but now, all I have to do is turn on the navigator on my phone, type in the address I need to get to and like magic, it tell me how to get there. What about the apps we use on our phones everyday. This morning for instance, I took a photo of my math homework and I e-mailed it to a classmate that was absent today. How cool is that? In the past, I probably would have had to go to staples, scan the pages, put them in a floppy disc or some other storage device, then go home and…. Well, you get the picture. In general, I use my computer for work (I record most of my voiceover auditions at home); for information (my last search was last night “how to treat folliculitis”); entertainment (I just watched another episode of Breaking Bad; my favorite TV show right now); and communication (I need someone to go with me to The Super 8 Film Summit, which is a 3-day workshop in Burbank CA. and I just posted it on my Facebook wall). As you can see, it’s not the computer per se, but the things you can do with it. The computer is the gateway, the common denominator in most of our activities in a day to day basis; therefore, not having a computer is more or less the equivalent of no having your car; you can still get by, but it is definitely going to be way more difficult to get through your day.
